5 Best Viewpoints in Lisbon – “Miradouros”

5 BEST VIEWPOINTS IN LISBON – “MIRADOUROS”

Lisbon is one of the most beautiful and charismatic cities in Europe. Super open minded, with sunny days all the year, it is the perfect city for backpackers. Unfortunately today, we are in a very difficult situation due to covid pandemic. Although there are no tourists and we are still in lockdown, we always think positively, which is why we have decided to create a series of articles to keep you company: the idea is to dream and plan your stay in Lisbon in the best possible way!

No one knows when this situation will end but we can certainly imagine ourselves getting lost again in the streets of this wonderful city. Each episode will be dedicated to different themes related to Lisbon and our hostels, of course: Lisbon Destination Hostel (located in Rossio train station), Sunset Destination Hostel (located in Cais do Sodrè train station).

The theme of the day is: the best view of the city, the “MIRADOUROS”. For those who follow us on Instagram and Facebook, for sure you have already noticed from the stories and videos that, just before the lockdown we started a new concept of free walking tour dedicated exclusively to these viewpoints (including the sunset edition, to discover the best sunset views of Lisbon). Let’s have a look at them!

*The distances used as reference are intended taking Lisbon Destination Hostel as the starting point.

Miradouro Alcantara Lisbon

1. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (650 m)

Where: Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, Barrio Alto

How: Take the Glória funicular from Restauradores Square, or walk up from Chiado.

This miradouro is one of our favourite because it’s only 10 minutes walking from Lisbon Destination Hostel. From the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara you can enjoy a sublime view of the city, which includes Baixa district, the area around the Avenida da Liberdade and the Tagus River. From here, you’ll see many of the most famous attractions such as the Castle of São Jorge, the Cathedral of Lisbon, the spiers of the church of São Vicente de Fora. There is also a beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy the view. In the garden you will find statues of heroes and divinities of the Greek-Roman mythology, such as Minerva and Ulysses; and of course, the most privileged and complete panoramic view of the São Jorge Castle and its walls. We recommended visiting this place at all times during the day, but especially during the golden hour, or in the night before going for a drink in the famous Bairro Alto district.

Miradouro Senhora do Monte - Lisbon

2. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte ( 1.3 km)

Where: Largo Monte

How: walk up the hill from Martin Moniz

The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is one of the most important historical monuments in Lisbon. It is also one of the quietest and less touristic viewpoints in the city, despite having exceptional panoramic views. To your left, there is the Graça church, the castle houses and the imposing and majestic São Jorge Castle as guardians of the city. In the background, the Tagus, the roofs of the Baixa, and the bridge. In our opinion, it’s the best viewpoint: it’s our favourite spot to watch the sunset with an exceptional view over Lisbon. Not being very popular with tourists, it is the perfect place to enjoy a beer with friends, to read a good book or simply to have a wide view over the city. About 20 minutes walking from Lisbon Destination Hostel, the route is uphill and steep, but the final result absolutely pays off. Enjoy!

Miradouro Santa Luzia - Lisbon

3. Miradouro de Santa Luzia (1.3 km)

Where : largo santa luzia

How: tram 28 or walking up Rua Augusto Rosa.

This is one of the most romantic and famous corners of Lisbon. It is the most instagrammable miradouro: with a beautiful terrace under flowery arcades surrounded by gardens and covered with azulejos that overlooks a breathtaking view. From here you can admire the Tagus, the ancient Arab walls and the expanse of the Alfama rooftops. It is a paradise for photography lovers. Often there are people playing music like a real jam session, others playing cards and again others enjoying a beer with a view. Super recommended for your best photo in Lisbon!

Miradouro Graca - Lisbon

4. Miradouro da Graça (1.1 km)

Where: Calçada da Graça

How: Walk up from Alfama or take tram 28.

A magical and fascinating place. The shade of the church and the pines allow you to rest on the terrace or on the surrounding walls. Located on the hill near the Castle Hill, the view over Lisbon is stunning. From here, you will have a wide view of the city and the Tagus River, which flows in the background. Obviously, you can admire the view of the 25 de Abril bridge, which is very beautiful even at sunset! The miradouro can be reached by tram 28, absolutely on the list of things to do in Lisbon!

Castelo Sao Jorge - Lisboa

5. Castelo de São Jorge (1.3 km)

Where: Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara,

How: Take the Glória funicular from Restauradores Square, or walk up from Chiado.

This is the most impressive viewpoint in Lisbon. Integrated into the Castle of São Jorge, with an amazing view of the city and the river, it dominates the surrounding landscape. The shade will allow you to rest after the walk. Recommended at any time of day, however, during sunset you will find a truly magical atmosphere. You can even find numerous peacocks, just remember to look upwards because they often hide in the trees.
